About Us
The Community Assembly of Brighton is located in a seaside resort in the area of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex which is situated south of London in the British Isles. Archaeological evidence of settlement in the area dates back to the Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. The ancient settlement of Brighthelmstone was documented in the Domesday Book in 1086. Brighthelmstone (or Brighthelmston ) was the standard rendering between the 14th and 18th centuries. Brighton has several nicknames Including The Queen of Watering Places , Old Ocean's Bauble , Doctor Brighton and London-by-the-Sea which is well-known, reflecting Brighton's popularity with Londoners as a day-trip resort.
The first settlement in the Brighton area was Whitehawk Camp, a Neolithic encampment on Whitehawk Hill. It is one of six causewayed enclosures in Sussex. Archaeologists have found numerous burial mounds, tools and bones, suggesting it was a place of some importance. There was a Bronze Age settlement at Coldean. Brythonic Celts arrived in Britain in the 7th century BC and an important Brythonic settlement existed at Hollingbury Castle on Hollingbury Hill. Cissbury Ring near Hollingbury is suggested to have been the tribal capital.
From the 1730s, Brighton brought a rapid improvement in its fortunes due to the contemporary fad for drinking and bathing in seawater as a purported cure for illnesses. From 1780, the development of the Georgian terraces had started, and the fishing village developed as a fashionable resort. By the 1970s, the town had acquired a reputation as a retirement destination, with an elderly population. However, this was reversed in the 1990s, as Brighton regained the fashionable status it held in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Community Assemblies are made up of residents concerned about a lack of democratic process at a local and national level, dedicated to preserving and asserting our inalienable rights and obligations to ourselves, the Earth and future generations.
